on a scale of 1 to john oliver commissioning a competing picture book about mike pence’s rabbit with a storyline about same sex marriage and democracy and tolerance, releasing that book a day before the release of mike pence’s picture book, and then donating proceeds from the book to the trevor project and aids united, how (righteously) petty are you

if I had the funding of John Oliver I'd be so much more petty

for better or worse i’ve recently realized that self care, for me personally, sometimes means extra effort instead of less. like making my bed every day makes me feel good about my living space even though it’s a couple minutes of work, and plating my food nicely makes me feel like i’ve made and eaten a nice meal even if it means cleaning more dishes. i used to think self care was almost synonymous with making things easier for yourself, but sometimes challenging yourself a little tiny bit more than usual is more rewarding than doing it the easiest way, although that isn’t true for everyone, i know, it’s just how things have turned out for me

Ah, the Mary Suez.

hundreds of years of language evolution and innumerable events had to line up in the exact right order for that pun to make sense.

if something you do for fun is making you stressed & anxious, it is time to take a break and spend time unwinding with something you actually find relaxing

biggest-gaudiest-patronuses

tags: yes this includes fandoms and internet spaces, but also video games or sports or books or literally any hobby. sometimes things you do to relax evolve into something more serious. sometimes things that we do just for fun end up turning competitive. there’s a natural human urge to challenge yourself and that’s fine! as long as what you’re doing still has value to you personally–go for it! but since it’s no longer serving its original purpose you need to also make time for other things that DO. i.e. hobbies that give you a calm space to relax in, because that is a basic human need

makeitearlgrey

Can I add to this: also not every hobby needs to become a side hustle, an Etsy store or used for gifting.

It is okay to have a crafting hobby that is purely your own. There’s this modern idea that if the thing you are doing isn’t somehow making you money it’s both unproductive and wrong.

It’s okay to have something which is purely your own, which you do for no reason but that you enjoy it. You can have a thing that you enjoy and if someone asks you “hey could you make one of those for me?” You can simply say “no, I’m sorry but I don’t craft for others” that’s not a bad thing to do. If you post a picture of things you craft and someone says “wow you should sell those” it’s okay to say “no, this is just for me, I don’t want to make money” that’s not wrong. It may confuse some people, but that’s okay too.

A hobby can be just a hobby, done for no reason but the personal enjoyment, happiness and peace that is gained from doing it.

I really believe there's some sort of "emperor's new clothes" phenomenon happening with Gen Z discoursers where they're too afraid to question the logic of some of the discourse being thrown at them for fear of appearing to be unwoke so they just blindly parrot it not to be excluded by their peers

jethroq

not just a Gen Z thing, like that’s a valid criticism of tumblr few years back, and I’m not ashamed to admit it sucked me in too. people can say whatever shit they want as long as they use the right vocabulary and an agressive tone that just implies that disagreement is out of the question. it sinks in because you will get similar messages about legitimate issues and sometimes from the same people.

For a second I didn’t realize it meant “high” as in a stoner–I thought “High Geologist” was like a rank of geologist or something and he was insulted you would challenge him to naming stones

You literally HAVE to stop with the whole fuckin "Person I think is cool made this thing instead of the person who actually did, who happens to be a raving bigot." thing. It does a disservice to literally everyone around you, and yourself in general.

It shows that you can't accept that this piece of media that you enjoy is intrinsically tied to a bad person's success, and any further engagement with it is only and exclusively to their benefit. It's not a funny joke. You're still giving your money to something made by a bigot, and gives power to bigots.

Miku didn't make shit. Neither did any of your favorite Lets Players. You have to accept that by being made by someone who wants real harm done to real people, you are facilitating that if you keep giving them money, and giving the shitty thing they made attention in the aftermath of learning what they've done.

Just fuckin... grow up.

hello I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. The anonymity of tumblr means that I associate my idea/image of you with your icon and sometimes I look at people’s icons and I’m like ‘hmmm….what is that and why?’

so pls reblog this and comment in the tags the meaning behind your icon and why you chose it. this is a social experiment. do it for science pls.

it's captain Picard I chose it because my url is a combo of his two catch phrases
